The Truth About Barndominiums
CMW is one of the Hill Country's most experienced barndominium builders — and we'll give you the straight story that most builders won't.
🏗️
What a Barndo IS
A steel-frame structure with a fully custom interior — high ceilings, open floor plans, and the same quality finishes you’d find in any luxury custom home.
❌
What a Barndo ISN’T
A cheap alternative. The framing costs less — but the interior finishes, cabinetry, plumbing, and electrical are identical to a traditional build. Luxury in equals luxury out.
💡
The Real Story on Cost
Yes, barndominiums can cost less overall — but not as dramatically as the internet suggests. We’ll give you the honest numbers, not a bait-and-switch estimate.
A Note from Jimmy
“Barndominiums are some of my favorite projects to build. You get the durability and open span of a steel structure, but every finish inside is entirely up to you. When it’s done right, nobody walks in and thinks ‘barn’ — they think ‘home.'”
— Jimmy Stewart, Founder & Owner, CMW General Contractors
Barndominium FAQs
Common questions we hear from Hill Country homeowners considering a barndominium.
A barndominium is a steel-frame structure — similar to a metal barn or agricultural building — finished on the inside as a fully custom living space. Think high ceilings, open floor plans, and the same quality finishes you’d find in any custom home: hardwood floors, custom cabinetry, granite countertops, and more. The exterior has the durability of a metal building; the interior is whatever you want it to be.
The honest answer is: somewhat, but not as dramatically as the internet makes it sound. The steel framing is more economical than traditional stick-frame construction — that part is true. But the interior finishes, fixtures, cabinetry, plumbing, and electrical systems cost the same regardless of what holds up the walls. A luxury barndominium is still a luxury home. The savings are real, but any builder promising dramatically lower costs on a high-end build isn’t being straight with you.
Absolutely. CMW has built barndominiums with high-end kitchen finishes, spa bathrooms, vaulted ceilings, custom millwork, and all the features you’d find in any luxury home. The steel frame gives you structural advantages — wider open spans, higher ceilings, greater flexibility in floor plans — while the interior is entirely custom to your tastes and budget.
Timeline depends on size, complexity, and site conditions. A typical barndominium build runs 6–12 months from breaking ground to final walkthrough. CMW will give you a realistic timeline in your proposal and keep you updated throughout the build.
In many cases, yes. If you already have a standing metal structure, CMW can assess whether it’s a good candidate for conversion into a livable space. Structural condition, foundation, and layout all factor into whether a conversion makes sense versus building new — Jimmy will give you an honest assessment during your free consultation.
You work directly with Jimmy — from the first conversation to the final walkthrough. He personally oversees and works on every CMW job site, including both the structural build and the interior finish-out on barndominium projects.
