About CMW & The Process
Who is CMW General Contractors and where are you located?
CMW General Contractors is a family-owned general contracting company based in Spring Branch, Texas, in the heart of the Hill Country. Founded in 1999 by Jimmy Stewart, CMW has been delivering custom homes, barndominiums, renovations, masonry, metal buildings, and commercial finish-outs across Central Texas for over 25 years. When you hire CMW, you work directly with our family-run team — not a salesperson or project manager you’ve never met.
How long has CMW been in business?
CMW was founded in 1999, which means we’ve been building in the Texas Hill Country for over 25 years. In that time, we’ve completed 500+ projects ranging from simple masonry jobs to full custom home and barndominium builds. A significant portion of our business comes from repeat clients and referrals — which we consider the best measure of our track record.
Will I work directly with a consistent team or be handed off to someone else?
All projects are handled and managed by Jimmy and his son, Chandler. From the first consultation through the final walkthrough, our family-run team personally oversees and works on every CMW job site. You won’t meet with a salesperson who disappears after signing — the person you talk to at the start is the same person you’ll see on your property every day.
What does the process look like from first contact to finished project?
Every CMW project follows the same four steps: (1) Free consultation — Jimmy meets with you in person to walk your property, listen to your vision, and give an honest assessment. (2) Detailed proposal — you receive a clear, itemized estimate covering materials, labor, and timeline. (3) Hands-on construction — Jimmy and his crew are on-site throughout the build with regular updates. (4) Final walkthrough and warranty — we don’t consider a job done until you’re 100% satisfied, and every project is backed by our workmanship warranty.
How do I get started?
The easiest way is to call us directly at (210) 394-7792 or fill out a form on the contact us page. We’ll schedule a free, no-obligation consultation at your property or project site and take it from there.
Pricing & Estimates
How much does a custom home cost in the Texas Hill Country?
Custom home costs vary based on the home’s size, design, finishes, site conditions, and overall scope. For the living space of a fully custom home, CMW projects typically range from approximately 175–300+ per square foot. Garages, covered patios, site work, and other project-specific costs may be priced separately.
Rather than relying on a broad range, CMW provides a detailed estimate based on your specific project and vision. This gives you a clearer understanding of your expected investment before moving forward.
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes. CMW offers free, no-obligation estimates on all projects. Our team will meet with you in person, walk your site or space, and provide a clear proposal before any commitment is made.
How accurate are your estimates — are there surprises at the end?
CMW provides detailed, itemized estimates that cover materials, labor, and timeline. We don’t underprice a project to win your business, only to increase the price later. If something changes during a project — unforeseen site conditions, client-requested upgrades — we communicate that clearly and in advance, not at the end when it’s too late.
Do you require a deposit?
Generally, no. CMW does not typically require a deposit to begin work. However, payment terms are clearly discussed and agreed upon at contract signing, with any upfront payment determined based on the scope and specifics of your project.
Barndominiums
What exactly is a barndominium?
A barndominium is a steel-frame structure — similar to a metal barn or agricultural building — finished on the inside as a fully custom living space. Think high ceilings, open floor plans, and the same quality finishes you’d find in any custom home: hardwood floors, custom cabinetry, granite countertops, and more. The exterior has the durability of a metal building; the interior is whatever you want it to be.
Are barndominiums really cheaper than traditional homes?
The honest answer is: somewhat, but not as dramatically as the internet makes it sound. The steel framing is more economical than traditional stick-frame construction — that part is true. But the interior finishes, fixtures, cabinetry, plumbing, and electrical systems cost the same regardless of what holds up the walls. A luxury barndominium is still a luxury home. The savings are real, but any builder promising dramatically lower costs on a high-end build isn’t being straight with you.
Can a barndominium be just as luxurious as a traditional custom home?
Absolutely. CMW has built barndominiums with high-end kitchen finishes, spa bathrooms, vaulted ceilings, custom millwork, and all the features you’d find in any luxury home. The steel frame gives you structural advantages — wider open spans, higher ceilings, greater flexibility in floor plans — while the interior is entirely custom to your tastes and budget.
How long does it take to build a barndominium?
Timeline depends on size, complexity, and site conditions. A typical barndominium build runs 6–12 months from breaking ground to final walkthrough. CMW will give you a realistic timeline in your proposal and keep you updated throughout the build.
Services & Scope
What types of projects does CMW handle?
CMW handles a wide range of residential and commercial construction: custom homes, barndominiums and steel-frame homes, renovations and remodels, masonry and concrete, metal buildings and barns, and commercial finish-outs. Whether you need a stone patio or a ground-up custom home, CMW brings the same standard of quality to every job.
Do you do smaller jobs like patios and masonry, or only large builds?
Yes — CMW takes on projects of all sizes. Masonry and concrete work, including patios, retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, and concrete flatwork, is one of our core service areas. No project is too small if it’s a good fit and we can deliver the quality our clients expect.
Can CMW handle commercial projects?
Yes. CMW handles commercial finish-outs, office buildouts, retail spaces, and tenant improvements. We apply the same attention to detail and commitment to schedule and budget that we bring to every residential project.
Do you work with an architect, or do I need to hire one separately?
For custom homes and larger builds, architectural plans are typically required. CMW can recommend architects and designers we’ve worked with successfully in the Hill Country, or we’re happy to work with an architect you’ve already engaged. We stay involved throughout the design process to make sure what’s drawn can be built on time and on budget.
